Orthodontic retainers are devices made of wire or plastic, which are designed to hold teeth in position after braces have been removed. The main purpose of a retainer is to enable your teeth to stabilize in their new positions after an Invisalign therapy.
During Invisalign treatment, some fragments of bone material are deposited around the teeth as they move into their new positions. As a result, the teeth need time to properly solidify in their current positions. For the months or years following an Invisalign treatment, wearing a retainer will ensure that your teeth are stable and properly anchored.
So How Long Should I Wear Retainers?
Following an Invisalign treatment, you should wear retainers for the initial 3-6 months after your braces have been removed. During this period, you should ensure that the retainers are properly fixed for at least 22 hours (everyday) unless we say otherwise.
Once we are confident that your teeth are sufficiently stable, we may recommend that you only wear retainers at night before going to bed. You will need to continue wearing them every night for at least one year. Thereafter, you can simply wear retainers every other night for a few years.
In case you find that your retainers are too tight and uncomfortable, you should consult us immediately to get them modified or replaced.
