Adult Orthodontic Treatment
Orthodontic problems such as teeth misalignment, jaw growth problems, bite problems, overcrowding of teeth, and others are issues that usually occur or start at an early age. Usually, they are easily treated using early orthodontic treatment, which offers a faster and longer lasting solution. However, when these early orthodontic problems are left untreated, they tend to grow, often becoming serious dental health issues that are harder to treat, especially in adults. Luckily, there is no such thing as being too old for dental health care. At Dougherty Orthodontics, we offer several dental solutions, including adult orthodontic treatment, to help fix your dental issues and give you back your smile.
Types of Adult Orthodontic Treatment
Orthodontic treatments work by gradually shifting teeth to their correct position. To achieve this, we use dental appliances that apply pressure to the teeth, until the desired position is achieved. These orthodontic appliances include:
||Traditional Braces. Traditional braces, also known as metal braces, are dental braces that are made of metal. They are the most common types of braces and are possibly what most people imagine when the word braces come up. The metal braces are comprised of metal brackets, with each bracket being attached to the others using a thin archwire. The brackets hold the teeth, and when the archwire is tightened, tension is applied to the teeth causing them to shift. Regular adjustments are needed until the desired results are achieved.
||Clear Braces. Clear braces are a more modern type of dental braces, which are made using clear ceramic, plastic, or plastic and ceramic material. They are similar to metal braces regarding design and how they work. They also feature a thin archwire that connects the braces and applies pressure to the teeth when tightened. However, the clear braces are more attractive. The ceramic and plastic material is also more comfortable compared to the metal brackets used in traditional braces.
||Invisalign® Aligners. Invisalign aligners are an alternative to traditional and clear braces. The aligners, while similar to braces regarding how they work, are quite different in other ways. They are made of plastic instead of metal or ceramic, they are more attractive, they are removable, and do not require adjustments, only refitting.
After Treatment Options
If your teeth are misaligned, you wear braces or aligners until the desired results are achieved. Depending on how serious your condition is, this can last a few months or even a few years. After removing the braces or aligners, an additional period is needed as your gums and jawbone grow to properly support the new positioning. During this time, a retainer is used to maintain the position of the teeth.
Concerns with Adult Orthodontic Treatment
While anyone can get braces or aligners, there are several concerns that arise due to adult orthodontic braces. To start with, since the jawbone and the gums are fully developed in adulthood, a lot more work is needed to shift the position of the teeth. This also presents another challenge on its own, as the force applied to the teeth can lead to additional dental problems – teeth damage due to fractures, chips, breaks, or cracks. The effectiveness of adult orthodontic treatment can also be largely affected by other dental problems such as infected gums and weak jawbone.
